You hear us say all the time that it is extremely important to keep your gutters clean and free of debris so they can function properly. While that’s decently easy to do during the warmer months, the same can not be said during the colder seasons. So does that mean you leave your gutters to fend for themselves until the weather warms up? No, you don’t. But then that begs the question — can gutters be cleaned in winter?
Can Gutters Be Cleaned in Winter?
The simple answer is yes. Although it’s not as easy as it is during the warmer months, you can clean your gutters during winter — it just requires a little extra attention and care. To properly clean your gutters during winter, here’s what you need to do.
Inspect the Corners and Anchors
Check your gutters for any leaks, cracks, or other damage that may have occurred during a winter storm. You sure also make sure that the gutters have not pulled away from your fascia due to heavy snow or ice. If they have, you’ll have to replace the spikes.
Check for Structural Damage
Take note of any stains, wood rotting, or other water damage that may have affected your home. These are all signs that your gutters aren’t clearing water properly and need to be repaired.
Clear the Downspouts
Make sure your downspouts are directing water away from your home and not simply letting it pool at the end of the spouts. If there is snow in front of them, dig a path that allows the water to flow into the street away from your foundation.
Clear Debris After Thaw
This is probably the least fun part of it all — but it is also the most necessary. It’s easiest to clean your gutters once any snow or ice has melted. Make sure to pay particular attention to the corners and areas where the gutter pieces connect as these are the areas debris is most likely to get caught.
