Beyond causing skin irritation in the form of itchy bites, mosquitos can carry dangerous diseases that they can infect you with. We’re sure that you’ve tried every which way to keep yourself mosquito-free, but there are a few extra ways you can avoid mosquito bites.
How to Avoid Mosquito Bites
Wear Repellent
If you know you’re going to an area where there will be a lot of mosquitos, cover yourself in repellent that contains 30-50% DEET. This chemical wards off mosquitos and keeps you bite-free. If you use repellent with less DEET, make sure to reapply it more often.
Wear Tightly-Woven, Light-Colored Clothing
Mosquitos can’t bite through clothes that are tightly woven. Workout clothing and clothing made with synthetic fibers usually work well at preventing bites. Mosquitos also don’t see light colors, so wearing white and other light shades can help you avoid bites.
Watch Your Carbon Dioxide Output
Mosquitos use carbon dioxide emissions to find food, so when you release more of it, you’re more likely to get bit. Exercising, eating spicy foods, and drinking alcohol all increase your CO2 emissions, so limit these activities to avoid mosquito bites when you’re in a buggy area.
Use Fans
Even the slightest breeze makes it difficult for a mosquito to fly, so placing some fans around the area you’ll be can help you stay bite-free. Since mosquitos fly lower to the ground, aim the fans at the low half of your body.
Get Rid of Standing Water
Whether it be in your gutters or a birdbath, standing water provides a breeding ground for mosquitos. Drain any water that has pooled in your yard, and check those areas after rainfall to get rid of any water that has collected again.
The main reasons your gutters become filled with water is because leaves and debris prevent rain from flowing down and out of your home. Keystone Gutter Helmet’s gutter protection system keeps you mosquito bite-free by keeping leaves from getting into your gutters in the first place.
